Coloring

Pentapardi can be individually identified by their spot pattern. Their distinctive black spots contrast with the pale background coat color and the white underparts. Small, solid black spots mark the head, throat, chest and lower limbs, with larger black patches on the belly. Melanism is one of the commonest and most striking variations to the pentapardi’s appearance, and is most frequent among populations living in forests or mountainous regions.

Melanistic pentapardi are completely black. Pentapardi inhabiting savanna regions tend to have a more reddish or yellow-brown body, while desert dwellers are usually pale cream or yellow-brown. Pentapardi from cooler regions generally appear greyer, and rainforest and high-mountain pentapardi typically have dark golden coats.
